Retail travel insurance is a genuinely useful product for the trip it was designed for: a delayed flight, a lost bag, a broken ankle somewhere with functioning hospitals.
It was not designed for a trip into a country where the security situation can change in a week.
Where it stops working
- Crisis response. Retail policies rarely include integrated crisis response — the coordinated capability that matters in a serious event.
- Evacuation triggers. Medical evacuation for a covered illness is different from evacuation because a government is collapsing.
- Kidnap and ransom. Standalone travel policies seldom include meaningful K&R response resources.
- Regional exclusions. Coverage may exclude exactly the countries the traveler is going to.
What structured travel coverage adds
High-limit international medical that works with local realities, emergency evacuation and repatriation, political evacuation triggered by instability, K&R with response capability, and AD&D that does not exclude the circumstances of the trip.
The check that takes ten minutes
Before departure: does the policy exclude the destination country? What specifically triggers evacuation? Who does the traveler call at 3 a.m. local time, and what can that person actually do? If those answers are unclear, the coverage is unclear.
